RESCUE ANIMALS
A few years ago, I volunteered at an animal shelter in Cherryfield, Maine. My goal was to help them find homes for animals that had been hard to place. I learned to spend time with the animals for a while before even touching my camera. The experience was gratifying and yielded some of my favorite "portraits."

These two older cats are brothers who'd never been apart. It was important to show them as the bonded pair that they are.

This outgoing fellow had just escaped an uncertain fate when I took his picture. He had spent three weeks traveling north to a no-kill shelter. He was still in quarantine but wanted nothing more than to greet every other creature in the shelter.

This dog was shy and easily startled by noise or movement. I sat with him quietly for about an hour before touching my camera. I hung a black cloth behind him. It reduced the effect of things that distracted him. It also allowed me to create a photo that captured the tension in which he lived.

A volunteer asked if I would photograph her guinea pig. Why not?

He was a pleasant and very inquisitive fellow. He enjoyed checking out my macro lens.
